US Senate candidates check tone in Hawaii forum

HONOLULU (AP) – Candidates running in a closely watched Democratic primary race for the U.S. Senate checked their tone in a forum on Hawaii’s Big Island.
On Wednesday evening, Hawaii Senator Brian Schatz faced off against his primary election challenger, Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa, at Hilo’s Sangha Hall. While Schatz promised no negative campaigning, Hanabusa seemed more aggressive and assertive during the 1 1/2 hour public forum. Hanabusa said she could accomplish more in Congress if she were elected to the U.S. Senate where Democrats enjoy the majority. Schatz touted his record in strengthening the Social Security System and benefits for retired senior citizens. Schatz said his Social Security voting record is stronger than Hanabusa’s. The primary election is set for 09 August 2014. Aloha, Russ.
