It’s good to see more funding for alternate fuel research. The quicker we wean ourselves off unreliable and often dangerous sources of fossil fuels the better. According to Hawaii Senator Mazie Hirono, the money will be used by University of Hawaii researchers conducting hydrogen fuel studies. The grant is part of an effort to advance hydrogen production and delivery technologies "to produce, deliver and dispense hydrogen at a cost of less than $4.00 per gallon." The funding will permit UH-Manoa scientists to investigate the use of photoelectrodes, which "harness solar radiation…to split water…into its original building blocks"–oxygen and hydrogen. Hopefully, safe, usable hydrogen fuels can be added to the mix of alternative energy sources that will lessen our dependence on imported oil. Aloha, Russ.
