The history of hurricanes in Hawaii
KHON2
Hawaii endured the most costly and deadliest hurricane in state history. The National Weather Service said Hurricane Iniki slammed Kauai with 140 mph winds.
KHON-2 has begun a three part series on Hawaii hurricanes. The programs are fascinating and a bit scary. The programs cover Hurricane Dot (August, 1959), Hurricane Iwa (November 1982), and the devastating Hurricane Iniki (September 1992). Iniki destroyed 1.421 homes, damaged more than 5,000 homes and businesses, and caused communications blackout lasting for days. Iniki damage was placed at $3 billion. Now that we’re in the hurricane season, Civil Defense officials are asking each of us to prepare an emergency kit for ourselves and our families, should an evacuation be ordered. Be sure to have a portable radio available to monitor civil defense bulletins. Aloha, Russ.
