OHA awards $1.5 million for charter schools Hawaii 24/7 (press release) The Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs has approved $1.5 million in emergency funding to 17 Hawaiian-focused public charter schools for the 2013-2014 school…

Russell Roberts‘s insight:

The OHA grants will be used “to address the budgetary shortfalls the schools have continued to face over the last five years.”  The money will ensure that The Native Hawaiian Charter School Alliance (Na Lei Naauao) will continue its role in keeping Hawaiian culture, language, and traditions alive.  According to Haunani Seward, the director of Ke Kula o Kekaha on Kauai, research has shown that Hawaiian children attending charter schools “perform better on standarized reading and math tests and are significantly less chronically absent than Hawaiian students in standard public schools.”  Aloha, Russ.
