Could Sharks be taking a bite out of Hawaii’s Tourism?
It’s no surprise why Hawaii’s been a favorite destination for travelers. But nowadays — less tourists are getting in the water — and it’s hurting Maui businesses.
We all know McGruff the Crime Dog "takes a bite out of crime." Perhaps, sharks are taking a bite out of tourism. According to Lynette Nelson-Peary of Aqua Adventures on Maui, 8 of the 14 reported shark attacks in Hawaii have occurred on Maui–something that "has dried up" her family business. Nelson-Peary says, "People get scared out of the water…they don’t want to go snorkeling…" There isn’t much ocean tour operators can do about the recent shark attacks, Marine scientists are studying the phenomenon, but have no easy answers. Other diving and snorkeling companies on Maui also report a large drop in business, allegedly caused by shark attack publicity on the U.S. Mainland. Aloha, Russ.
