Poll: Hawaii Senate primary neck-and-neck
The Hill (blog)
That tight race is being driven by Hawaii’s ethnic political divide, according to the poll.
According to a poll conducted by Honolulu Civic Beat, Hawaii Senator Brian Schatz has a very narrow lead over Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa for next year’s U.S. Senate Race. Schatz is favored by white voters, while Hanabusa is supported by Japanese-Americans and Native Hawaiians. Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie appointed Schatz to fill the unexpired term of the late Hawaii Senator Daniel Inouye. On his deathbed, Inouye asked Governor Abercrombie to appoint Hanabusa to the post–a wish denied by the governor. This should be a very tight race. The winner of the state’s Democratic Primary will most likely be the next Hawaii Senator, since Republicans and other political parties in the state have no candidates capable of beating either Schatz or Hanabusa. Hawaii’s congressional delegation will continue to be Democratic in 2014. Aloha, Russ.
