Hawaii News and Island Information · Entries RSS …. Aerial shooting is required for compliance with the federal court order mandating the removal of sheep and goats from critical habitat for palila, a bird endemic to Hawaii.

Russell Roberts‘s insight:

Aeriel hunting of sheep, goats, and pigs has been a contentious issue on Hawaii Island.  Apparently, aeriel shooting is required by a federal court order.  Would it not have been less costly to use local hunters to control these animals?  The hunters could use the meat to feed their families.  Sometimes, federal programs are remarkably short-sighted.  Aloha, Russ.
