Fed public defender refuses Hilo man’s scam case

HILO, Hawaii (AP) – The Federal Public Defender’s office in Honolulu has turned down a Hilo man’s wire fraud case because of budget cuts.

Federal authorities say they have no money to defend Hilo resident Justin Wade Smith, who faces 39 counts of investment fraud. A judge will appoint a private attorney to represent Smith at taxpayers’ expense. Aloha, Russ.
