US readies rationale for possible Syria strike

(AP Photo/Manuel Balce Ceneta). Secretary of State John Kerry speaks at the State Department in Washington, Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, about the situation in Syria.
I have an uncomfortable feeling about this. Wasn’t the issue of chemical attacks against civilians one of the reasons the U.S. fought the first Gulf War against Saddam Hussein? Now that Russia has a naval base on Syrian territory, the situation gets particularly sticky. The Russians claim we have no proof that Syrian President Assad used toxic gases against his people. UN teams sent to check on such claims have been attacked. The ripple effect of this growing crisis will send gasoline prices soaring. All the more reason to wean ourselves off foreign oil. I see another endless U.S. mission in the Middle East. Aloha, Russ.
