Man allegedly steals $1M by scamming dozens in Hawaii – Hawaii News Now

Man allegedly steals $1M by scamming dozens in Hawaii
Hawaii News Now
The Honolulu FBI and Hawaii County Police arrested a 32-year-old man in Hilo on 39 counts of wire fraud totaling more than $1 million.

Russell Roberts‘s insight:

I’m glad the FBI and Hawaii police finally nabbed this guy.  Although Justin Wade Smith may be guilty, aren’t some of the victims just as responsible for being part of the crime?  These internet scams are fairly well known and police have warned people for years not to trust any investment scheme without proof.  The adage holds true in this case:  if it’s too good to be true, it usually is.  If you feel you’ve been "taken" by this guy, call police.

  1. Mike says:

Greed and stupidity are a bad/, expensive and sometimes lethal combination. You are correct (again), Russ, these flakey schemes have been around and reported on enough over the years that people should be aware of them by now. People are becoming too reliant on other people to make decisions for them. What happened to personal responsibility? Think for yourself people !! If you are that stupid, you deserve to lose you money.

    • Russ Roberts says:

Unfortunately, this trend to mindless acceptance of most everything is becoming the norm. Personal responsibility is sorely lacking in our political, social, and economic life. The “entitlement” mentality is a deadly virus. It will sap our strength and weaken us in the long run. All China and Russia have to do is wait until we self-destruct. Vladimir Putin must be enjoying our self-created financial disaster. Russ.
