Hawaii Pops First Season Gets Underway with Country Music Superstar Jo Dee …
The former Honolulu Symphony has been reborn as "Hawaii Pops", a format popularized by the late Aurthur Fielder and the Boston Pops Orchestra. Classical, jazz, and popular music is blended into multilayered offering that has shown staying power over many years. On Hawaii Island, "The Hawaii Concert Society" has enjoyed considerable success with the "pops" concept. The Hawaii Concert Society will hold its season-opening concert on Wednesday, 18 September 2013, with a program honoring the 100th anniversary of Igor Stravinsky’s "Rite of Spring," one of the 20th century’s most important avante-guard compositions. Big Band and jazz orchestra leader Duke Ellington once said, "If it sounds good, it is good." Check out any pops concert and you will find enjoyable music that touches the human soul. For more information on local pops concerts, contact the East Hawaii Cultural Center at 959-4064 or 935-5831. Aloha, Russ.
