The Hawaii primary election does not require that a voter affiliate with any one political party in order to participate in the primary election Democrats (#democrats: Democratic Faction Seeks to Close Hawaii Primary Elections – IVN News
When you have two or more vigorous political parties with a variety of strong candidates running for office, a closed primary makes sense. In Hawaii, the Republican Party is nearly moribund and the Greens, Libertarians, and other splinter groups are having a rough time fielding viable candidates. For all practical purposes, there is only one political party with any real power in Hawaii–The Democratic Party. So, what are Democrats afraid of here? They’ll get the majority of votes anyway. Perhaps this is an attempt to shut down the campaign hopes of independents, who do not follow the Democratic Party’s agenda. This is just a poorly concealed power play. Even a child can see this. It would be refreshing to have leading Democrats be truthful for once. Aloha, Russ.
