DETROIT, MI – Four trustees of Detroit’s public pension funds have spent $22,000 from retirement system funds to attend a conference in Hawaii, according to Reuters. Read the story, “What Detroit crisis?

Russell Roberts‘s insight:

Apparently, some of the Detroit public pension fund employees decided to visit Hawaii anyway.  I trust that the Motor City’s voters aren’t amused by this irresponsible act.  Maybe I’m assuming too much. Perhaps Detroit residents really don’t care what happens to their tax dollars.  With technology being what it is today, there is no real need to visit a distant place for a seminar or workshop when the event can be televised through the internet.  "Go To Meeting" software and other conference software can bring the event to an auditorium or meeting room facility.  Even Hawaii County uses this stuff to videoconference its regular County Council meetings.  Urban Finances are tight enough without some people taking advantage of "the citizen’s dime."  Shameful example of irresponsibility. Aloha, Russ.
