Kumu Hula Rae Fonseca died Saturday following a performance at a hula festival at Ko’Olina. Kumu hula Kapi’olani Hao told the “Honolulu Advertiser” that Fonseca just collapsed. Bystanders, including a nurse at the performance, attended to the stricken Hula kumu until Emergency Medical Service personnel arrived. Fonseca was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Word of Fonseca’s death came shortly after the passing of Dottie Thompson, who helped establish the Merrie Monarch Festival.
