Kilauea Military Camp invites you to pay tribute to our veterans, active duty, and retired military today at 3 p.m. on the camp’s front lawn.  Former Mayor Harry Kim will be the keynote speaker.  Other speakers include Nan Kaneshiro of Kilauea Military Camp and Cadet Commander Alex Magno of the Waiakea High School Naval JROTC.  All U.S. military veterans, active duty, and retuired military attending the ceremony are invited free to the KMC Veterans Day dinner buffet.  For reservations, call 967-8371.

Hawaii Island police are investigating a robbery Monday at a Waimea pharmacy.  An unidentified  man armed with a handgun entered the pharmacy off Kawaihae Road with his face  obscured and demanded drugs. The suspect fled the area on foot and disappeared into some bushes.  The man is described as in his 20s, between 5 foot 7 and 5 foot 10 with a slim to medium build.  He was wearing camoflage clothing and was carrying a camoflage backpack.  Those with leads should call the crimestoppers number at 329-8181.

Two more lanes will be added to Highway 130 as part of a $14 million state plan to improve driver safety and to reduce traffic congestion in lower Puna.  According to the “Hawaii Tribune-Herald”, a 2.3 mile section of the highway will be widened from the Keaau Bypass Road to the Shower/Pohaku drive intersection.  Construction should start in February 2011 and take two years ot complete.

Two dozen Hawaii Island residents with the soon to be closed Psychological Rehabilitation program applealed to the State Council on Mental Health and Substance Abuse Tuesday for the continuance of the program.  Using a video link to Honolulu, residents affiliated with the PSR program told officials that the program provides vital transportation services for those undergoing treatment.  A new treatment program will only provide transportation for those living within Hilo.

The northern section of the Mamalahoa Bypass will be closed today, Veterans Day, and reopen for southbound travel between the hours of 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Thursday, November 12th.

Ka’ula Bridge in O’okala, Hamakua, will be closed for repairs, beginning the week of November 16th.  Residents should use the Old Mamalahoa Highway to access the Hawaii Belt Road.  The bridge is scheduled to reopen December 16th weather permitting.

The Council of Neighbor Island Advisors for East Hawaii will meet on Thursday, November 19th, 5:30 p.m., in the County of Hawaii Aupuni Center Conference Room.  Matthew Kaneshior, Hawaii Correctional Industries administrator, will present to the Council and the public plans for expanding services on Hawaii Island..  HCI is a self-sustaining division of the state Department of Public Safety that provides inmates with real-world work opportunities to help increase their employment prospects upon release.

(AP).  Hawaii Democratic Senator Daniel Inouye is co-sponsoring legislation that would allow children of Filipino World War II veterans living in the U.S. to become permanent residents.  The soldiers were offered citizenship in exchange for fighting alongside U.S. troops more than 60 years ago, but most family members have had to wait for immigration visas.
