The County of Hawaii will celebrate Hawaii’s 50th Anniversary of statehood with a special concert and celebration on Friday, August 14th, at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. A similar celebration will be held in Kona on August 23rd. Special guests at the Hilo event will include former mayors of Hawaii County and various dignitaries.
Entertainment will be provided by The Makaha Sons. Admission is free.

Police say 67-year old John Mahoe, Sr. of Hilo died Monday in a two vehicle crash near the Jackson Volvo dealership.
Mahoe’s pickup truck climbed a sidewalk, returned to the highway, and hit a vehicle stopped in traffic. The pickup truck then climed the sidewalk again and struck several posts near the care dealership.

Police have begun a coroner’s inquest in connection with the discovery of a woman’s body found on Keiki Beach near the south side of Honokahau Harbor. The woman has been identified as 38-year old Kelly Susan Stevens of Kailua-Kona. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

The remains of Tropcial Storm Felicia passed between the Big Island and Maui Monday evening, bringing a few heavy showers and increased surf to east facing shores. The American Red Cross has opened several shelters on Maui, Molokai, and Lanai. Felicia will be downgraded to a tropical depression sometime today as it moves west at 10 mph.

Two water tankers are monitoring the remains of a 130-acre Waikoloa brushfire that started around 3 pm Monday within the Wildland/Urban area of Akaula Court. The cause of the fire is undetermined.

Hawaii County Police have charged Darren Ching and his wife, Cherlyne Ching, with a variety of drug violations.
Using a search warrant at a home on Ahulani Street, police recovered more than seven pounds of powder cocaine, 12 grams of crack cocaine, approximately 10 ounces of crystal methamphetamine, nearly half a pound of marijuana, four firearms, and more than $5,000 in cash.
